Prison camps in bulgaria in 1952?

i watched the movie I Am David and at the begining it said the camp Davaid grew up in was in bulgaria in 1952. I just learned about WW2 and i learned that the last of those camps were liberated in 1945. and the Nazi party was ended then too. So why does the movie/book take place in 1952???
